Characters' Backgrounds:
Characters' Backgrounds:
Ron decides to become a policeman because he misunderstands his mother and Michael's relationship. Michael is one of the senior officers of the police training school and he is a very strict teacher. Ron quickly holds a strong grudge against Michael because of his strict personality and him always being around his mother. Ron's parents are divorced and he has always been hoping that his father and mother will be reunited someday, so he doesn't like Michael being in the way of his parents uniting.
Sammul decides to become a police officer because he would like to have the responsibilities that a police officer has. He also likes the amount of money earned from being a police officer. Sammul's grandfather works for Fiona's parents and Sammul hopes that he will have enough money so that his grandfather could retire and not work again. Sammul's mother passed away and his father left them so he takes care of his grandfather and loves him very much.
Tavia lives with her family and they are very poor. They trick people and steal goods from people to resell them and make money. Tavia doesn't like to steal goods and she hopes that her family will stop stealing but they have been doing it for many years so they do not want to stop. Tavia decides to work at the police training school to make money so that her family will not need to steal goods and she doesn't wish to make money by stealing and tricking people.
Fiona's family is very rich and they live together in a very large mansion. Her mother and father spoil her because she is their only daughter but her mother can be really strict with her about ruining their family's reputation. Fiona decides to become a police officer because she wants to be like her hero, Michael. Michael once saved her in a fire when she was stuck in her car. Fiona's parents dislike her dream of being a police officer because they are an extremely rich family and this may ruin their reputation.
The storyline is a quite complicated yet interesting one so I won't type it out, but the storyline consists of many themes. It involves family issues, friendship, love and life lessons.
Characters: (*WARNING: THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS MAY HAVE SPOILERS*) Zhou Lup Mun (Ron Ng)- Zhou Lup Mun is a person that quickly jumps to conclusions and acts without thinking clearly first. He is a very nice person but can sometimes be mean when he thinks that people are betraying him or doing terrible things to him. I disliked Zhou Lup Mun at times because he was quite mean to Lei Pa Kiu and he acted without thinking a lot. But I began to like him because I understood that he was going through a lot of family issues and because of his kindness towards Ho Fa. He showed that he was a very caring person when he always helped Ho Fa and he was worried about her when she was sad or had problems to deal with.
Lei Pa Kiu (Sammul Chan)- Lei Pa Kiu hides his feelings a lot of the time. He could not speak out about his family and he liked Ma Hoi Lum incredibly but he didn't tell her how he felt and this made her need to guess how he felt. He felt that he and Ma Hoi Lum wouldn't make a good couple because she was extremely rich and he was not even close to her in wealth, so he constantly pushed her away from him. Pa Kiu can be really stubborn at times but he does have a soft side and is emotional. I quite like Lei Pa Kiu because he is kind, understanding and calm. He was actually the opposite of Zhou Lup Mun when coming across problems because he was a lot more calm than him. Lei Pa Kiu is really quiet and seems shy too, which is why he isn't as social as Zhou Lup Mun.
Ho Fa (Tavia Yeung)- Ho Fa is very torn between her family and Zhou Lup Mun because her family dislikes him due to his part in her brother's arrest. Ho Fa is also torn between following her conscience and breaking the law like her family. She doesn't want to steal but her family steals and wants her to as well. I don't really like Ho Fa because she can be quite confusing in what she is thinking. She seems to avoid situations and cannot bring herself to face the truth. But one thing I like about Ho Fa is that she is good-hearted and she does try to help Ma Hoi Lum when she has troubles with Lei Pa Kiu. She is a very kind person.
Ma Hoi Lum (Fiona Sit)- Ma Hoi Lum has trouble getting along with the other girls at the police training school. This is because she is very rich and doesn't know many things that other people do since she has maids to do chores and other jobs for her like ironing, cooking etc. Ma Hoi Lum is outgoing and likes Lei Pa Kiu but isn't afraid to show her feelings for him, whereas Lei Pa Kiu often hides his feelings, therefore they sometimes clash. Ma Hoi Lum really looks up to Lei Mun Sing and idolizes him. I like Ma Hoi Lum because even though she doesn't know how to do ordinary chores and is a bit 'princess-y', she doesn't have the usual rich person personality that is in movies. She isn't mean at all, instead she is kind and tries to achieve her goals no matter what other people think. She also isn't afraid to show her feelings which is another reason why I like her, she is outgoing and friendly.
Lei Mun Sing (Michael Miu)- Lei Mun Sing can be a very harsh and strict teacher. He doesn't show that he cares for others and is actually a very kind-hearted and good person. I hated Lei Mun Sing at first because of his strict and harsh ways of dealing with people and he said many terrible things to a lot of people. He really kept to himself and rarely laughed or smiled. But I totally misunderstood Lei Mun Sing because beneath his straight face there is a likeable, caring and understanding person. He can seem to be really mean but he is strict to teach the students at the school well and this is his style of teaching. He cares a great deal for others but he doesn't directly show it and he is very understanding concerning his students' outside problems. I think that Lei Mun Sing is a very meaningful character. His character teaches you the quote "Don't judge a book by its cover."
Cast: Ron Ng- I think that Ron did a brilliant job in this series! It is because he had many emotional scenes, his character had family problems and I think that this really boosted his acting skills. I liked how his character was quite moody at times because it showed how his character was when he was happy and when he was sad. Ron was great and I really liked to watch his storyline of his relationship with his parents and Lei Mun Sing (Michael Miu). Ron Ng could play many emotions and feelings in this series and how he felt really showed in his facial expressions and in the way he was doing things.
Sammul Chan- I loved Sammul Chan's character in this series and I also reckon his acting for the character was great! He played quite an interesting character, a person that hid his feelings and kept to himself. Sammul was a bit 'mysterious' because he wouldn't know what his character was thinking. I think that he portrayed his character very well and made the character seem to be realistic because he had the right expressions for his character. I especially liked Sammul's scenes with Fiona Sit and Michael Miu. I think that he had special connections with them throughout the series.
Tavia Yeung- Tavia played a good-hearted character with a lot of depth in her. I think that Tavia acted out Ho Fa pretty well but I reckon that sometimes she confused me because I don't know what her character is feeling. However, I think that it is more of the script's fault rather than her fault. Tavia did play her character splendidly especially with the family issues and I liked the bond she had with her father. I think that this role is quite different from Tavia's other roles because Ho Fa has a very different background from her other roles. I reckon that this series will help Tavia in her career throughout TVB because it showed that she can act out different people with different personalities and backgrounds.
Fiona Sit- I think that Fiona was very good in this series. I think that "The Academy" is her first TVB series and she hasn't done much acting, so I think that she did wonderfully. Fiona did play Ma Hoi Lum fantastically when she was with Lei Pa Kiu (Sammul Chan) because she did show her feelings for him and when she was upset or being emotional, you could really understand how she felt. I hope to see Fiona Sit in other series because she is a fresh face for TVB and her acting is great too. I think she will continue to improve to be a great actress.
Michael Miu- This is the first TVB series I have seen Michael Miu in and I think that he is such an excellent actor! He portrayed Lei Mun Sing as the harsh and criticising teacher on the outside and a kind, caring person on the inside. I think that Michael Miu was perfect for this role because he played Lei Mun Sing so realistically. I think that Michael Miu will definitely be remembered after watching this series because his character was very meaningful. Lei Mun Sing's expressions and actions could tell you exactly how he was feeling in a mean, angry way but in his heart he is actually worried about people and truly cares for their safety.
Chemistry: Ron Ng and Tavia Yeung- Ron and Tavia didn't have many scenes together so I think that it is really hard to judge if they had great chemistry as a couple or not. But I predict that they would make a lovely couple because of their understanding of each other and also because they care deeply for each other. They try to help each other out with problems and obviously like each other a lot.
Sammul Chan and Fiona Sit- I think that Sammul and Fiona did make a cute and great couple because the liked each other a lot and Fiona worried about Sammul a lot. She was also willing to disobey her parents just to be with him. Sammul and Fiona did have arguments but I think that it was because their relationship had just begun and they didn't understand each other that well.
Michael Miu and Michelle Yim- I reckon Michael and Michelle would make a wonderful couple! They understood each other very well and had known each other for many years. Michelle knew exactly how Michael's personality was and Michael would really try to help Michelle whenever she needed assistance in anything. They really cared a lot for each other as well.
Chin Ka Lok and Deep Ng- Ka Lok and Deep made a great couple but it was a shame that they didn't have that much screen time as a couple because of their misunderstandings in the past. I think that Ka Lok and Deep loved each other very much but tried not to show it because of their misunderstandings and possibly the embarassment. I think they made a lovely couple!
Favourite Scenes: ~ Ron making an agreement with Michael for joining the police training school in exchange for him to stay away from his mother ~ Fiona showing her feelings for Sammul (how sweet!!) ~ Fiona and Sammul's scenes together as a couple (so cute!) ~ Fiona and Sammul being kidnapped ~ Ron's aunt telling other people's future ~ Michelle finding out that Michael really liked her ~ Ron finding out that his parents divorced because his father cheated on his mother ~ Tavia crying after she realizes that the rich boy deceived her ~ Ron's aunt trying to date Michael ~ Chin Ka Lok finding out that Deep didn't cheat on him ~ Ron and Tavia kissing ~ Tavia being punched by her brother because she wanted to protect Ron from getting hurt ~ Fiona telling her parents she wants to dance with Sammul instead of the rich boy that they wish for her to marry ~ Fiona pushing the rich boy that her parents wanted her to marry in the swimming pool ~ Sammul discovering that Michael is his father ~ Michelle breaking down in tears when she realises that she no longer has any feelings for her ex-husband but she really wants her children to be happy about the family reuniting again ~ Michael secretly smiling and Sammul glancing at him and smiling back (very funny!! =D) ~ Many more other scenes!!
Conclusion: To conclude I would like to say that "The Academy" was a great series! You cannot miss it, epecially if you are a fan of the cast and if you like police series! I think that the cast did really well and this series is definitely one that you will not forget or regret watching. It has very interesting storylines and doesn't drag so it is a wonderful series!
